Handmade Holiday Gift Guide • Wire and Honey

HOLIDAY SHOPPING DEADLINE
Domestic shipping: December 15th
International shipping: November 30th

Sarah in her own words...

Do you have any fun nicknames? How did you get them? One of the reasons my mom named me Sarah was because she doesn't like nicknames. Ironically, almost no one calls me Sarah. My husband and most of my friends call me Rah. I honestly don't even know how it started but it stuck. I love it.

Tell us about you!!!
I grew up in a suburb of Baltimore, MD and I live in the city now. I adore it here. Baltimore gets such a bad rep but it's such an artsy, quirky city. Most of my inspiration for my line comes from the city we live in. I live here with my husband, Steve. He is a programmer by day and the muscle behind Wire and Honey at night. We have a 3.5-year-old son named Brady (after Brady Anderson--Baltimore, baby!) who pretty much runs things around here. We also have two dogs, a pug named Dewey and a golden retriever named Maximus, and we just adopted a hairless kitten named Lisbeth. We have a lot of creatures crammed into our little house! We wouldn't have it any other way.

What is the name of your business and what is it you make?
Wire and Honey. We make clothing with a message. My husband and I are both liberal bleeding hearts who are passionate about issues such as gender equality, fighting racism, women's rights, and global health. We are the first brand to take these issues and put them on children's apparel. We get a lot of blowback that we shouldn't expose children to "adult" issues and that we should just let kids be kids. However, from living in the city we have learned that these issues ARE children's issues. So many kids are facing racism, bullying, and sexism daily. We believe that the children who wear our clothing are the ones who are going to change the world so it's important to teach them to stand up for what is right at a young age.

How did you start your business? How has it evolved?
I kind of fell into this business. I have zero business experience, my background is in education. I was a middle teacher before Wire and Honey. After I had Brady I had to go back to work when I was only 5 weeks post partum and I didn't take it well. I had horrible Post Partum Anxiety that I thought I could fight on my own without the help of doctors or medication. The combination of my PPA and the stress of teaching pushed me to the brink of a nervous breakdown. It came dangerously close to Post Partum Psychosis and I would go days at a time without sleeping and started having auditory hallucinations at night. Quite frankly, it was terrifying. With the encouragement of my husband I quit my career and got the help I needed. I still struggle with my anxiety but I'm medicated now and under a doctor's care so I manage it well.

Although leaving my career was the best thing that I could have done for my mental health, I missed it. I taught in a low income area and worked with the most amazing kids and I missed helping people. I felt like my purpose was gone. In the meantime I found the amazing world of small shops and started shopping small exclusively for our son. My husband saw a spark in me that had died and was the one who gave me the confidence to start a shop of my own. When we started, we were mostly producing trendy, pop culture designs. We had one controversial design, Vaccines Save, Bro, and that is what really launched our shop and became what we were known for. As the years have gone by we have slowly moved away from most of the trendy  tees and have instead decided to focus on the issues that matter most to us. We use our clothing to raise awareness and then donate a portion of all proceeds to different charities each month that deal with those issues.

What is the meaning of your business name? How did you come up with it?
Again, a nod to the city we love. Baltimore is best known to those who don't live here by two things: the HBO show The Wire and Baltimore Hons (think Jon Waters films like Hairspray). Hence, Wire and Honey.

What is your biggest dream for you and your business?
My dream is for Wire and Honey to become successful enough that I can start my own nonprofit to help my city. Ideally, I'd like to develop a program to keep middle and highschool students off the streets and help them get into college through grants and scholarships. I'd also like to grow to the point where we can hire employees and can hire the "unemployable" like those with criminal records and special needs. I desperately want to give back to the city I love.

What is your favorite part? The part you don’t care for as much?
My favorite part, hands down, is seeing customer photos and hearing customer stories. Our hope is that our clothing can provide teaching tools for parents to address complex issues such as racism and tolerance. We don't just want children to wear our clothing we want them to know WHY they are wearing it. So it's so beautiful and rewarding when parents tell us about the conversations they have had with their little ones because of our line. It lets us know that we are making a difference, however small, in this world. My least favorite part is time management. Like all moms, I suffer from immense guilt when Brady asks me to put my phone down or my computer away. There are days when he begs me to play and I just can't. That hits you right in the gut. I'm constantly learning and adjusting so that he comes first but I would be lying if I said it wasn't a struggle.

What is something we wouldn’t know about you or your business?
I'm a total introvert and I hate confrontation. Most people think I am loud and outgoing because of the controversial nature of our shop but that couldn't be further from the truth. I am passionate about these issues so I do what I do despite my discomfort. It's not easy to deal with the constant hate mail and backlash but I believe so strongly in these causes that I force myself outside of my comfort zone to advocate. Deep down, I am essentially an 80-year-old trapped in a 32-year-old body. I spend my personal time quietly reading and watching the Golden Girls. I'm really painfully boring.

What has been your biggest accomplishment so far? What are you most proud of?
We were officially backed by the National Meningitis Association which was huge for us. We are strong vaccine advocates and to have an organization that we respect so much recognize our efforts was incredible. As far as what I'm most proud of, it's standing up for what I believe in despite the backlash. We have received hate mail, threats, had our photos and address posted publicly for people to harass us, basically anything you can think of to try to scare us into stopping what we are doing. We won't back down though. I wasn't made to be subtle or to follow the path of least resistance. I'm proud that we keep fighting and advocating despite all the obstacles in our way.

What are your plans for the holidays? What is your favorite way to spend the holidays? Favorite traditions? I love the holidays! Eating is pretty much my favorite thing in the whole world so Thanksgiving is my jam. We are really quirky in our Christmas traditions. Ever since I was little I have been obsessed with Charlie Brown Christmas. So, when it was my year to pick a tree (we cycled who got to pick a tree each year) I would find the smallest, saddest, ugliest, half-dead tree on the farm and cut it down. My family HATED it! Thankfully, my husband loves me despite my quirks and let me continue that tradition into adulthood. I'm hoping that Brady inherits my love for ugly trees so we never stop! We aren't religious so on Christmas Day we always go to the movies and at night we get together with our friends for sushi. I love it. We see our families on Christmas Eve but Christmas Day is all ours.

What does shopping small mean to you?
Supporting passions. Building dreams. Knowing that every purchase I make pays for a little girl's clarinet or a little boy's dance lessons. I love knowing that there is a real person behind a shop and that every item was made with the love, creativity, sweat, and tears of a man or woman trying to support their family and not a giant corporation. It's rooting for the little guy and letting them know that their dreams and aspirations are appreciated and valid.

Why is handmade so important?
For all the reasons listed above. You aren't padding the pockets of millionaires. You are helping a family put food on the table and supporting someone's dreams.

Are you doing any local holiday events? Let us know the dates, where, etc.
No! I ran myself ragged last holiday season. I want to be able to enjoy the season with Brady this year. He's 3.5 so this is the first year that he really gets it and he is so excited about the holidays.

What else makes you super special, Rah?
I am super awkward and quirky. I almost went to mortuary school and have a fascination with the macabre. I'm afraid of penguins. The sound of someone biting into an apple gives me chills. If you tickle me I get really, really angry. I have to place all the remotes in the house upside down or I can't relax. I don't like having my knees touched. I am horrible at making small talk. It's painful. I'm so awkward that if I see an acquaintance out in public I will hide so that I don't have to make small talk. It's embarrassing how weird I am.

What is the name of your business and what is it you make?
Ahoy Amigo, a children’s clothing brand featuring comfortable clothing with fun playful patterns.

How did you start your business? How has it evolved?

What is the meaning of your business name? How did you come up with it?  Ahoy Amigo means HI friend!! We combined two languages (pirate counts!) because everyone should be friends, pirate or not!

What is your biggest dream for you and your business?
to have EVERYONE rock Ahoy Amigo!!

What is your favorite part? The part you don’t care for as much?
my favorite part is seeing customer wearing threads I handmade, and also screen printing all my fabrics by hand!! My least favorite part is cleaning my screens, ink is messy!

What is something we wouldn’t know about you or your business?
my grandmother taught me to sew by hand was I was little! I didn’t buy a sewing machine until 2014!!

What has been your biggest accomplishment so far? What are you most proud of?
every time I finish an item I am proud!!! Biggest accomplishment would be all of it!!

What does shopping small mean to you?
Shopping small means supporting someone’s dream.  My dream wouldn’t be possible without people like you!

Why is handmade so important?
Handmade is important because it means you know exactly where your clothes came from and whats in them!!

What are your plans for the holidays?

instagram.com/modernmunro
HOLIDAY SHOPPING DEADLINE; regular shipping, customs, priority, international, etc.: November 27th.

Kymberley in her own words...

Do you have any fun nicknames?
My husband called me "Honey" and my daughter calls me "MAAAAAAAAMAAAAAA"

Tell us about you!
I was raised in Nebraska, but moved to Southern California when I was 16. I am married to my amazing husband, Michael, whom I met on a blind date! We have a gorgeous two year old, Scarlett Munro who is our everything. We are a motocross family and love to be outdoors!

What is the name of your business and what is it you make?
Modern Munro- we specialize in baby & toddler clothing and accessories- From leggings, to rompers, to dresses, to kimonos, to headwraps & bibdanas! we do it all!

How did you start your business? How has it evolved?
I started my business back in February 2015 making bows locally at craft shows. I have always been an avid small shop supporter, and once my daughter was born, my passion for shopping small turned into a full blown addiction. Since starting with just bows, I have evolved in being able to literally clothe your minis from head to toe!

What is the meaning of your business name? How did you come up with it? Modern Munro means so much to me because it is named after my daughter, Scarlett Munro. Munro was the middle name to my husband's mother, who passed away when he was 8.

What is your biggest dream for you and your business?
My biggest dream is to be able to quite my day job!! I would love Modern Munro to be so self sustaining, that I can focus 100% on it.

What is your favorite part? The part you don’t care for as much?
My absolutely favorite part of what I do is seeing my creations on other people! When a customer sends me a photo, or tags me on Instagram, I get so giddy! I always show my husband and say "eek! I MADE that!" The worst part? I am so clumsy! I am ALWAYS hurting myself while sewing.

What is something we wouldn’t know about you or your business?
To a lot of people running a small business is a piece of cake, but not for me. I have epilepsy that sometimes keeps me in bed for a couple days at a time. Every single item is made during nap time, early in the morning or late in the night. With my full-time job and my "illness", I work on MM when everyone else is relaxing/asleep.

What has been your biggest accomplishment so far? What are you most proud of?
I literally went from never, ever touching a sewing machine in my life, to being able to bust out complicated rompers, dresses and more! I feel like that is absolutely my greatest accomplishment.

What are your plans for the holidays?
I have a very small family all spread around the USA, and we always get together during the holidays! I look forward to this time of year, every year! We don't really have "traditions", just to be together!

What does shopping small mean to you?
It means so much! It means that you are helping a mom or dad put food on their children's plates. It means you are helping someone reach their dream of owning a business. It means you are ensuring that the lay man can prosper and not just the corporation.

Why is handmade so important?
Handmade is so important because it isn't being busted out in mass at a factory. The attention to detail is always so amazing. The quality is 9 out of 10 times better than mass produced items and they tend to last a lot longer!

Handmade Holiday Gift Guide • Wolfe and Scamp

 HOLIDAY SHOPPING DEADLINE:
International delivery 11/14
Standard delivery (US) 11/28
Rush delivery (US) 12/12

Hanni in her own words...

Do you have any fun nicknames?
HBIC. My initials are “HB” and my small shop friends thought it would be hilarious to call me “HBIC” (head bitch in charge). I mean, if the shoe fits ...

Tell us about you!
I am a Texas transplant by way of Florida and Virginia before that. I grew up freezing my tush off in the 49th state in a tiny rural town (Wasilla) whose sole claim to fame is being the home of Sarah Palin … and also, I guess, yours truly! If you are what you eat, I am pickle-flavored popcorn and pumpkin … anything pumpkin. I am married to the kindest human being on the planet and together we are raising Wolfgang, a three-year-old toddler monster, and the little-boy love of my life.

What is the name of your business and what is it you make?
Wolfe and Scamp. We make RAWR-some dino, dragon and unicorn hoodies for kids who want to slay while they pretend + play.

How did you start your business? How has it evolved?
Wolfe and Scamp is really a love letter to my son. Frustrated by the lack of imaginative clothing options in big box stores, I made Wolfe his very first dino hoodie in 2013. At the request of friends and family who wanted to buy rawr-some hoodies for their fashion kids, in 2015, I started Wolfe and Scamp. Lovers of both fashion and imaginative play embraced brand, and in 2016 we innovated to add things like dragons and unicorn unicorn jackets to our portfolio mix.

What is the meaning of your business name? How did you come up with it?
Wolfe is my son and also the inspiration behind our designs. Scamp is your child, my child, every small person on the planet who has ever dared to dream big, be curious, and find magic even in the mundane.

What is your biggest dream for you and your business?
It’s maybe not my biggest dream, but I do have this secret fantasy where Gwen Stefani's boys rock my hoodies. Those kids are RAD.

What is your favorite part? The part you don’t care for as much?
Jim Henson said, “As children, we all live in a world of imagination, of fantasy, and for some of us that world of make-believe continues into adulthood.” I still want to be a dinosaur when I grow up! My favorite thing about Wolfe and Scamp is knowing that, when a child wears one of our designs, they are magically transported into a world where fashion is fun, where putting on a jacket is an invitation to engage in imaginative play.

What is something we wouldn’t know about you or your business?
In our first incarnation, Wolfe and Scamp looked like a baby gift shop.  For the first few months, we mostly sold bibs, burp cloths, headbands, beanies, … stuff like that.  While I enjoyed the process of making handmade gifts for babies, my passion for imaginative play wasn’t reflected in those offerings and in 2016 I made the decision to shift selling dinosaur, dragon and unicorn hoodies exclusively.

What has been your biggest accomplishment so far? What are you most proud of?
Albert Einstein said that imagination is everything. If we understand that for children, their work is play and that play is serious work, my biggest accomplishment is providing an opportunity for a child to stomp, crouch, or growl their way through an otherwise ordinary day.

What are your plans for the holidays? What is your favorite way to spend the holidays? Favorite traditions?
For us, the holidays are all about time spent with family and friends! We do the usual family get-togethers, but also host a friendsgiving where the main event is Christmas crafting; each year Wolfe and his friends make an ornament which they take home to display on their trees. Now, last year we did mini gingerbread houses, and I can’t speak for the other littles, but our house didn’t make it 24 hours before Wolfe decided it was too delicious to display. Woops.

What does shopping small mean to you?
When you shop small, you are making a conscious decision to spend your hard-earned dollars to support someone’s dream, to put food on their table, to make it possible for a parent to say home with their child. In addition to being my fashion muse, Wolfe is also a child with autism. When you shop at Wolfe and Scamp, 100% of the proceeds are applied toward Wolfe’s necessary medical and therapeutic expenses.

Why is handmade so important?
In a world where so much of what is available is mass-produced, disposable, junk, I like to think that the idea of something made from the careful, deliberate hands of a fellow human is something we should take seriously.

Handmade Holiday Gift Guide • Little Faces Apparel

Jennifer in her own words...

Tell us about you!!!
I live in Northern Virginia, married to my 7th grade crush and have 3 kids, ages 17, 9, and 4. I'm a die-hard Pittsburgh Steelers, Washington Capitals, and New York Yankees fan.

What is the name of your business and what is it you make?
Little Faces Apparel - handcrafted children's clothing and accessories

How did you start your business? How has it evolved?
I started this business in 2013, shortly after having my daughter. I started out making tutu costumes and then once the holiday rush ended, it evolved into making clothing and then accessories.

What is the meaning of your business name? How did you come up with it?
I've always called my kids "littles" and then it evolved to "little faces". Because it was such a constant saying in my house, the name just made sense to use.

What is your biggest dream for you and your business?
I'd love for my business to grow enough so that I can employ other moms, or dads.

What is your favorite part? The part you don’t care for as much?
I love coming up with new ideas. Creating the samples aren't always fun because there's a lot of wasted materials but perfecting the size and piece is so rewarding.

What is something we wouldn’t know about you or your business?
In addition to my shop, I also have a full-time in the high stakes testing field.

What has been your biggest accomplishment so far? What are you most proud of?
I love seeing customer's wearing our clothing. Seeing kids wear the clothing that I've sewn with my own hands and hearing how much they love it, or being a part of pregnancy reveals using the shirts that I've screen-printed, is so great!

What does shopping small or buying handmade mean to you? I always try to shop small and as much as I can. I love  knowing that I'm helping another person, however that may be. That may be something as simple as allowing them to go out to eat every now and then, signing their children up in sports they love, going on a vacation, or just about anything that brings joy for them.

Jennifer in her own words...

Do you have any fun nicknames? How did you get them?
"Twitch" Lovingly nicknamed by my students.
When I get overworked, overstressed, and overtired, one of my eyes twitches. This kind of thing happens when you're a Mama, full time teacher by day, and small shop owner by night - aka HUSTLER!

Tell us about you!
Hometown - Pittsburgh PA (Go Steelers)
Current town - Kissimmee FL (House of the Mouse aka Disney)
Married for 7 years, 1 fur baby, and my son Trace just turned 2 years old!

I'm a full time Professor at Full Sail University, where I teach Digital Cinematography, Producing and Project Planning.

I volunteer with our local school district, and personally founded an annual "Cinderella Dress Drive" to bring free prom dresses to underprivileged High School girls in my school district. We typically collect between 300 and 500 new and gently used gowns every year and then help girls to shop!

My family loves spending time at Disney, the Beach, and traveling to visit our family back in Pennsylvania as much as we can.

What is the name of your business and what is it you make?
Rolls And Raspberries. We sell funny kids tees, and a few adult designs too!

How did you start your business? How has it evolved?
I started my business in November 2015, using a drop shipping service who printed, packaged, and shipped all my orders. In summer 2016 I started the transition of purchasing my own equipment, learning how to use it, and beginning to do my own production within my home studio - this has let me decrease turn around time and be more involved with quality management and customer service. My company will celebrate our 1 year anniversary the last week of November 2016! We have big plans to continue learning, growing, and evolving. It's been a ton of fun so far!

What is the meaning of your business name? How did you come up with it?
My two favorite parts of the baby stage: baby ROLLS and babies blowing RASPBERRIES. I photo captioned a personal photo with "Rolls And Raspberries" and my friends got a kick out it, and it just sort of stuck as a unique name.

What is your biggest dream for you and your business?
I would love for my items to be stocked in a children's boutique. I've had a lot of interest but it hasn't come to fruition just yet. It's a goal I'm working towards!

What is your favorite part? The part you don’t care for as much?
My absolute favorite part of having this shop is being tagged in photos from customers of their child wearing one of our tees. To me, that photo tag notification is better than any sales notifications, 100%. I think it's amazing to know there are other people out there who share my sense of humor, and are spreading the laughter with everyone who sees their child in a funny tee. And the Instagram small shop community has just been an incredible perk that I wasn't expecting. No way I'd still have a shop a year later, without the support of other shop owners and Mama friends.

I don't care for marketing. The majority of my time goes to designing, manufacturing, and customer service, so I don't have a lot of time left for promotion. I need to work on this.

What has been your biggest accomplishment so far? What are you most proud of?
I'm proud of the fact that I've almost reached our 1 year mark! I also recently sold out of all Halloween theme designs, which is a BIG thing for my small business. Being that my birthday is on Halloween, it was the best "gift" ever!

What does shopping small mean to you?
Shopping small means supporting other makers and their families in a very direct way! It means acknowledging the creativity and hard work of another person who is also pouring their heart and soul into their business. I love shopping small for GIFT gifting - not only can you find something personal and thoughtful, you can find something that they don't already have, because it's not available in stores. And the absolute best thing is that you might inspire the recipient to start shopping small as well, after they receive (and love!) their gift.

Why is handmade so important?
Handmade it important because you are directly influencing and supporting the maker of the product, and not a third party. There are many ways an item can be handmade, and each process is special and important.

What are your plans for the holidays? What is your favorite way to spend the holidays? Favorite traditions?
My little family will be traveling north for the holidays. I'm super excited because it's the first year my son will "understand" a bit more about Santa and Christmas, and I'm hopeful he will get to experience snow for the first time. It's just so much more fun to enjoy the holidays through a child's eyes.

Anything else you’d like to add…

Recently on October 22, I hosted a group "Instagram Rep" photo shoot, which took place at the ESPN soundstages at Full Sail University. We had 10 Instagram "Rep" models on set and their families, and we received products from OVER 20 other small shops to make up the kids' outfits. It was an 8 hour shoot day (organized chaos) but was a ton of fun, and allowed us all to break through the social media screen and connect with the community in person!
